With your help, it will be benefitting

* Current pledges! *
Update: Jay and I stayed in the competition for 34 hours, so we were awak for almost 44 hours straight. With your help, we raised $1147 in pledges. Thank you so much!!

Some pictures taken during the competition. My journal which was updated during the competition.

In December, my name (Julia Weatherby) was drawn to be one of 30 contestants who will be competing to win a triathlon bike and a whole bunch of other triathlon gear. In the style of "Hands on a Hard Body", the winner is the last person standing with their fingers on the frame. It's actually going to be a rail around the bicycle to fit all 30! The contest starts at 7:30PM Friday, April 29 and may last the entire weekend. You can read more about the details of Fingers on a Frame.

In looking for a way to motivate myself through the competition, I realized that if I got people to sponsor me for every hour I am standing there, it would encourage me to stand there even longer. Even if I don't win the big prize (and what a prize it is!), my time and energy and pain wouldn't be for nothing.

I am hoping to raise awareness of cyclists on the road and raise money for the Texas Bicycle Coalition. TBC is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing bicycle access, safety and education in Texas. As a cyclist, I know that riding my bike is probably one of the most dangerous things I do, as my bike is no match for a fast-moving vehicle. It breaks my heart when I hear of other cyclists killed or injured on the roads. Even just this month, my coach and a training teammate were hit and injured while on their bicycles.

TBC educates both cyclists and non-cyclists. Your contribution will go towards that teaching children how to ride their bikes to school safely, as well as reminding motorists to watch out for those of us out there on bicycles.

How you can help

You can pledge to sponsor me by the hour, or you could make a donation for a set amount.

1. Fill out this pledge form to let me know how much you will donate, so I can track the success of these efforts!
2. Come down and watch part of the competition, which will be at Jack & Adam's Bike Shop on Barton Springs (next to Chuy's).
3. I will inform those who donated how long I was able to stand through the competition. (If I stand 9 hours and 45 minutes, it will only count for 9.)
4. When you know how much to donate (which may be now if it is a set amount), go to the TBC contribution page to donate! Of course, you can contribute by simply joining/renewing as a member. By selecting Contribution for TBCEF education programs, it will be tax-deductible as well.
5. Feel great that you are helping cycling in Texas be a more enjoyable and safe experience for all of us!
Related Information
I can't tell you how many hours I will be out there, because I just don't know! I do hope that if I can do races that last 9 hours or 14 hours, I can at least stand in place for a similar amount of time. In the Hands on a Hard Body Competiton, the winner sometimes stands 78 hours to win the truck!

My fiancee, Jay Weinshenker, will be competing as well! I also have some other triathlete friends in the comptetion. I'm excited that there are a lot of triathletes who I'll get to know so much better through this experience.

If you don't have the money to give, consider helping me out during the competition in another way! I am allowed to have a "domestique" to assist me during the short breaks (5 minutes, once per hour). Consider coming down to help me for a break or two. I can switch out who my domestique is as often as I'd like. Sometimes all I may need is someone to drop off some ice or food. If you are up for that, leave me your number so I can call you if I need something (and the hours you're willing to field calls!)

No donation is too small! I've had some very generous donations so far. Don't feel that you have to match them or donate an even dollar amount. Any donation is welcome. Donate the price of a stamp per hour... anything!

Check back to see my progress! I will link to updates, possibly have photos, and will hopefully be able to post contribution pledges as they come in. Thank you!
